As a woman navigating ADHD in midlife, I know that motivation can be as unpredictable as WIFI in an elevator, my kid texting me his ETA, or unlocking a side quest I never expected (YMCA Gravity instructor certification anyone?).
With a dopamine menu, you don’t have to wait for inspiration to strike - you just pick from your pre-made list and go!
A dopamine menu is the ultimate cheat sheet for our unpredictable brains. In part 1, we are breaking down what a Dopamine menus is why it’s helpful. I part 2, we’ll look at specific examples of dopamine menus and how you can create your own – stay tuned!
The dopamine menu concept was developed by Jessica McCabe, creator of the YouTube channel, How to ADHD. in 2020 as a way to help her ADHD clients choose healthy activities to boost their dopamine levels.
Since then, dopamine menus have gained popularity (in the ADHD community and beyond check out TikTok, with a timer set!) as a tool for enhancing motivation, focus, and a sense of accomplishment.
The concept is simple. Using a menu format, you make a list of dopamine-stimulating activities to promote healthy, wellbeing, and focus.
Like at a restaurant you offer (yourself):
Appetizers (easily done in a short amount of time)
Dance full out to a favourite song
Entrées (requires more time and planning)
Brainstorm wild and wacky ideas on sticky notes
Sides (done alongside entrées)
Listening to an audiobook while prepping dinner
Desserts (indulgences best to be done in moderation)
Scroll social media (for a set amount of time, use a timer)
Specials (longer activities, done on special occasions)
Plan a getaway to an exciting destination
