How to Make Space For What Matters Most This Year
363 days.
That’s how many days are left in 2025 and if you’re feeling like it’s time to make space - mental AND physical - now is the best time!
As we envision what the year ahead holds for us personally and professionally, it’s a good time to consider just what we need to make these intentions a reality. The start of the year is the perfect time to consider what to keep and what to let go of.
In 2025, I’ve been thinking about the implications of making space for what matters most.
Why bother making space?
By making space, we create an atmosphere that allows new possibilities and opportunities to emerge.
According to my colleague (and fellow Make Space collaborator) Erica R,
“Making space is a loving act of creating new/enough/more space to call in what I desire in my life. It's a clearing. An opening. A place of beauty and healing.”
Whether you make space by clearing clothes from your closet, re-arranging your art supplies, sorting your paperwork, categorizing your files, or clearing your surfaces of clutter, there is a spaciousness that reveals itself when you actively choose to make space. There is a lightness you feel that is calming and energizing.
When I think about “making space”, I immediately envision lightness, buoyancy, and clarity – all stemming from letting go of what’s no longer needed. It’s a release of belongings, ideas, spaces that no longer serve you, and an invitation to make space for new opportunities, connections, and creativity to emerge.
When we actively declutter and organize our belongings, spaces, ideas, and relationships, we let go of the things that hold us back, keep us small, and make us feel all over the place.
Reflections as to why making space matters, from those who have:
“It allows me to reflect on my life and my priorities in a practical way”
“I take stock of what I own – it’s been so long I forget, and it just ends up as clutter
“Choosing what to include in my life and what to let go of so I can do more of what I love
“Starting! I always want to declutter but it’s so overwhelming to start. Doing it with someone helps.”
“Stepping into a new version of myself by getting rid of stuff that no longer serves me”
Ultimately, making space is about letting go of:
Expectations
Fear
Limiting Beliefs
Past identities
Actual belongings!
