Talk about athletes as thought leaders and inspirational educators! At the recent KidsCAN event at Bill Crothers Secondary School, over 50 Olympians and Paralympians met with more than 700 students to share a variety of sports and fun activities as well as their messages about the importance of physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
To see students trying archery, playing wheelchair basketball, or my favourite, males and females doing rhythmic gymnastics, there was so much laughter, playing and sharing – plus many stories of inspiration, dedication, challenge and success. Athletes can play such a big role in motivating students to think big and go for it.
Noted Jeane Lassen, Olympic Weightlifter, “KidsCAN School Day is an opportunity to expose kids to all sorts of sports they may never have known existed. Even if kids don’t find something they’re passionate about on this day, they can leave with the confidence to try other new things when the occasion arises.”
